Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
