The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the ability to challenge specific calls from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
