New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying such drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
