British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
